About Susie
Hello! My name is Susie and I am a mixed media artist living just outside Belfast, Northern Ireland.
There is a remote and haunting beauty to be found in the Irish countryside. I am drawn to the forgotten corners of the landscape, where ivy creeps over tumbling stone walls and the twisted hawthorn tree stands alone in a field.
Using a combination of black ink and watercolours my aim is to capture the atmosphere and wild beauty of these hollow places, and to evoke a feeling of longing and nostalgia for a place where the past lingers on.
Attending Aberystwyth University’s School of Art introduced me to printmaking and a process called mezzotint in particular. This printmaking technique opened up a world of moodiness and atmosphere to my work which I had not known I needed till I discovered it!
Examples of my old mezzotints.
After leaving university I was sadly unable to keep up with printmaking and so I returned to drawing once more. Using black pen enabled me to achieve those fine and intricate details I previously got through etching and watercolours enabled me to add colour to my work without detracting from the drawing beneath.
Examples of my mixed media pen and watercolour.
Whilst I do dabble with the odd animal illustration (my introduction to the joy of creating art) my work is mainly focused on scenes from the Irish countryside of which there is no end of inspiration.
